Popcorn Purist – Get away from me with those M&M’s – Cheap Date Night

Once…ages ago, I went to the movies with a group of ladies. We all ordered a bucket of popcorn, then one lady ordered M&M’s, another ordered Good ‘n Plenty. We took ourselves off to our seats, juggling popcorn, pop, candy and handbags to watch some movie. I can’t recall the details right now, because of what happened next.

One woman dumped M&M’s in her popcorn. DIRECTLY IN THE TUB!!! I was shocked! Seriously? I said “You’re going to have a heckuva time digging those out of there” still assuming, in my naive way that it had been an accident. She merely laughed, scooped up  a handful and starting chomping away.

The next woman dumped Good ‘n Plenty’s in her popcorn. IN IT. LICORICE IN HER POPCORN.

Well, of course, I never went to the movies with them again!

A girl has standards.

I’m an Orville Redenbacher girl. He’s the man. I’ll occasionally cheat when I go to the theater, only because they refuse to pop a bag for me. *Rolls eyes* My favorite is the pour over butter.  omg. yum!

But here is ONE other recipe I’ll use for popcorn. It’s quick and easy (go figure) and makes a lovely snack or Christmas treat.

Popcorn Almond Bark

Start white almond bark melting on the stove, or in the microwave if you’re like me.

Pop popcorn. Plain popcorn, no butter, no salt. Just the basics.

Scoop popcorn into melted bark, leaving out the old maids. Add in a few handfuls of dry-roasted peanuts and red and green mini marshmallows. Scoop out by the heaping tablespoon onto wax paper. Let cool.

Smart Ass Romance - Bottums Up - Fun Drink RecipesWhile your almond bark is cooling – mix up a batch of these:

Beam me up Scotty

In a short rocks glass filled with ice, add ½ shot Jim Beam, 1 shot each Baileys and kahlua, and top with a cherry garnish.

It’s straight liquor boys ‘n girls, so make sure this one’s a sipper!

Now make sure you’re sitting with a treat in one hand, your drink in the other. You’ve only got 12 seconds after this movie loads to get them eaten!

didn’t get your treat eaten yet? Go ahead, hit replay. I won’t tell anyone.

Do you mix with your popcorn? Give us the dish!

  • Don’t ask me why, but your mention of “old maids” or kernels that haven’t been “popped” has me laughing so hard that I can barely type. Am I the only person who thinks that’s a funny analogy?

Not a fan of white chocolate, but homemade carmel corn with nuts is a big treat! (I’ve never seen red and green marshmallows!)

    • Never seen green and red marshmallows? Remind me to send you a package! =) And I’m sure that’s JUST why they were called old maids! =)

  • I’m a big fan of the multicoloured sugar coated popcorn. The other day Mr B bought a bag of it and we ate the whole thing by the fistful. But, honestly? You lost me at Good n Plenty. Oh how I love that candy! You can’t get it here in Australia but I was addicted when I lived in the US. Friends visiting still smuggle me over little boxes of the stuff. Though I would NEVER pollute it with popcorn.

    • Naomi, I’ve never seen the multicoloured sugar coated popcorn! Sounds delish. Sorry you can’t get the Good n Plenty’s although I’ll have to say that’s not on my favorite list! =( Maybe Santa will bring some for Christmas?

  • Callene Rapp:

I would have been as horrified as you at the M&M’s in the popcorn, but recently a little chocolate shop opened locally, and one of their products was popcorn that had been drizzled in chocolate. Really good chocolate. Really really good chocolate. I was skeptical, but it was delish and now I’m hooked.

When we do popcorn for movie date night (during which we never leave the house and stay in our jammies) we pop our popcorn on the stove. Old school, that’s how we roll! Or pop, as it were.

    • Oh I did have some chocolate drizzled popcorn from popcorn, indiana….verrrry nice. I’ve done it the old school way too, but generally only when there’s a power outage! =)

  • Just give my plain popcorn, a little seasoning. Caramel covered popcorn I can take, but you can keep the chocolate covered.

Oh, and on a sailboat, we use a saucepan, handle and a lot of shaking on the stovetop to get the just right popcorn taste. ;-0

  • Oh yes ladies – pure, fresh-popped popcorn drizzled with real butter and the tiniest dash of salt. Sock it to me. Just between us … I’ve been known to have it for dinner if my husband is out.
I still usually go for the pop-it-yourself kind rather than microwave … there’s just something about it … although Orville and I have spent some time together too. I’m going to make your bark recipe with the grandchildren Carrie!

    • I think my attention span is too short for the pop-it-yourself kind….it always burns! of course, i tend to burn it in the microwave too……=) but yup, it’s definitely sometimes just as good for supper!

  • If I drank that someone would have to scrape me off the floor! Sipping or not. I could just hunker down with a blanket and pillow, I suppose. I’m with you on the popcorn thing – although I like a caramel wash or even peanut butter on popcorn.

Peanut butter is good on anything. Even pizza.

  • My son does the M&M’s in his popcorn thing. I love it ~ salty and sweet, but not all the time. I’m not a big fan of popcorn to begin with, so if you can add chocolate to it, yay!

Yeah, I’m not sure about peanut butter on pizza either. I might have to try it.

  • I’m with Jennifer — love that phrase, ha,ha.
I gotta try the Beam me up Scotty. This sounds like something I would enjoy to sip while relaxing in front of the fireplace, book in hand. Now I’m talking, right?

    Love the popcorn video!
